Our Club de Golf Barcelona had the honor of hosting the Men’s Spanish Championship Under-18, celebrated from 24th to 27th of March 2022. The 123 best players on the Spanish youth scene went through the driving range of the Barcelona Golf Academy to warm up and tune their strokes before jumping to the golf course to play in a four-day event.
Among them were four of our golfers: Alejandro de Castro, Jan Farré, Juan de Castro and Ignacio Berea. On a course in magnificent conditions, designed by José María Olazábal, the first round received the players with cold weather and showers at times. Nobody managed to beat the course, with the Catalans Marcel Fonseca and Iván Ponsdoménech leading the field tied, a great result in such circumstances. Alex de Castro was 40th with 79 shots, Juan de Castro 54th with 80, Jan Farré 64th with 81 (in the picture), and Ignacio Berea 92nd with 84.
In the second round, Marcel Fonseca was the leader alone, after delivering the best scorecard of the day, with 70 strokes. For his part, the favorite Jorge Hao began to come back being second with 71 shots. Our left-handed Alejandro de Castro (at the picture) was similar, rising to 10th place with a magnificent 71, while Juan de Castro delivered a scorecard of 80 shots and placed 58th, Ignacio Berea with 79 and placed 81st, and Jan Farré with 83 and went to 87th place.
The third round was a turnaround in the leaderboard. Despite the delays due to the rain and the threat of suspension due to lack of light, Jorge Hao from Madrid signed 7 birdies and one bogey to show the best card of the championship, 66, with which he became the new leader. Alex de Castro fell behind to 13th place with 76 shots, and our other golfers missed the cut, with Ignacio Berea in 81st with 80, Juan de Castro in 85th with a round of 85, and Jan Farré in 89th with 81.
And in the fourth and last round Jorge Hao ended up winning the championship easily, thanks to a 70, and 282 shots in total (-6), which distanced him by four hits from the second classified. Alejandro de Castro shone with a card of 73 shots, to go up to the 8th final place, with a total of 299 strokes, which is an excellent result, and fills us, the teachers of the academy, with pride.
Congratulations Alex! Keep going!
