The golf competitions continue in Summer, and from the Barcelona Golf Academy we continue traveling, however far, so that our players can compete at the highest level. On this occasion, the expedition went to the Club de Golf Panoramica, a regular golf course on our agenda, which we also visited last December when events started up again after the stop due to the pandemic.
This was the WAGR Summer Championship, from July 16th to 18th, and we looked forward to the challenging course designed by the professional Bernhard Langer, in the town of Sant Jordi, Castellón. With our two vans, loaded with players and bags of golf clubs, we had some twenty registered players in search of the desired points of the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR). And together with our Head Coach, Carlos Vivas, we also took Job Sugrañes, caddy of the European Tour and member of the technical team of the academy, as an expert in GamePlan, to support the game strategy of our golfers.
Well, the first thing we should highlight is the fantastic performance of Enrico Rissi, who in Castellón came close to savoring victory after his time in the United States. Although across the ocean his golf was rather rebellious, Enrico took advantage and graduated in Mechanical Engineering from the prestigious Purdue University. Now, while he is doing his Masters, the University has hired him as a teacher of a subject.
That is why, after having had a bad time with his golf for the last few years, we are delighted to see how he is picking up little by little and returning to the top positions. This was clear in Panoramica, where he started as the leader tied on the first day, with a tremendous 72, and stayed second on Saturday with another 72, just one shot behind.
In the third and final round he was well on his way to victory. However, a ruthless triple bogey on the 17th hole, and a triple putt on the 18th, after having reached the green in 2 shots, he finished with 74 to tie with Ignacio Jiménez (75) at 218 shots. It was a pity that he failed in the play-off ‘lottery’, which was enjoyed by all the public, but Rissi had to settle for second place which, of course, was painful, but was of great merit given what had happened in the last few years. Congratulations Enrico!
Reviewing the results of the WAGR Summer Championship in Panoramica Golf, we also highlight Pablo García Terol, player of the Eagle Program, who accompanied us on our expedition, and who scored the lowest round of the entire event, 68 on the last day, finishing 5th tied with 223 shots. Also in the Top-10 were Maxim Danilin, Vicente Mestre and Erik Shukhart, the three tied for 10th with 227 shots in total.
Nicolay Barrios, a new addition to our High Performance Elite Program, finished 15th with 229 shots. We’d like to mention everybody, in the order of the final positions, for their courage and youth: Bruno Camí, 25th with 237 shots; Vladimir Taldykin, 30th with 240; Tomás Junquera, 31st with 241; Jan Farré, current Nº4 of Spain in Infantil category, 33rd with 242; Andorran Eudal Teule, 34th with 243; Marc Llorens, 36th with 250; Jon Julià, 39th with 253; Daniil Taldykin and Xavier Rosell, both 42nd with 260; and Alexander Company, 45th with 286.
In the women’s event we were accompanied by the fighter Daniela Campillo, who scored a good 71 in the second round and finished 4th with 226 shots. This time her follower was Laia Llorens, who took 11th place with 256 shots.
And as we were in Castellón, we made sure we could enjoy a ‘paella’ by the sea. A great trip. Well played friends, keep going up and up!
