Last weekend, from Friday 2 to Sunday 4 of July, the best amateurs sought the title of champions of Catalonia on the spectacular Fontanals Golf course, in Girona, and a dozen players from Barcelona Golf Academy were there, representing the Club de Golf Barcelona.
The event was played over three rounds, and therefore 54 holes, in a tournament that scored for the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR), and also for the Grand Prix for men and women Absolute, Boy and Girl, and Cadet categories of the Federació Catalana de Golf. Sadly, one of the favorites, our 2020 champion Alisa Khokhlova, couldn’t participate as she had gone to play the European Team Championship representing Russia. In turn, we celebrated the debut of the brothers Marc and Laia Llorens in a Catalonia Championship.
On the first day, a highlight was the fantastic game of Alejandro de Castro, who was well in the lead with -5, until two final bogeys penalized him to finish tied at 69 strokes in the first place (with Mariano Ayora and Joel Ramírez). Also in the men’s category were Enrico Rissi (75), Maxim Danilin (76), Vladimir Taldykin (81), Joan Panisello (83), Daniil Taldykin (86) and Marc Llorens (90).
In the female category Valeria Biarge started with a good 73 that placed her sixth. Along with her, our friend Daniela Campillo started well and scored a card of 74, followed by Laia Llorens with 79.
On the second day the situation was complicated for many of the favorites, when Joan Panisello finished with a fantastic 73, which gave him a spectacular leap up on the leaderboard. Enrico Rissi (74) and Maxim Danilin (75) improved slightly, while Alex de Castro (78) lost the rhythm. Marc Llorens (84), and brothers Daniil (90) and Vladimir (91) Taldykin didn’t make the cut.
In the female classification the leader stood out (Miriam Ayora with 72), while Daniela Campillo (76) and Valeria Biarge (77) played well, and Laia Llorens (84) was successful in making the cut in her first Catalonia Championship.
And the last day was the recovery of Alex de Castro (73), who with 220 total shots rose to the 9th place, best player of the BGA. Maxim Danilin (73) got his best score and also climbed to 17th place, while Enrico Rissi(80) classified 28th, and Joan Panisello (80), went down to 41st.
The girls all didn’t have their best day and at least Valeria Biarge (79) was able to keep her 9th place with 229 shots. Daniela Campillo (82) couldn’t perform to her maximum level due to an annoying cold and finished 11th, and Laia Llorens (83) was 18th.
In the end, two of our players finished inside the Top-10, another event in the bag for everyone and on for more, because shot by shot the way to the top is made. Cheers to everyone!
