Great news from the United States. The University of Louisiana Monroe (ULM) women’s golf team rallied to win the 2024 Great River Cup, defeating James Madison (JMU) 2-1-2 in the championship match on Tuesday, February 20, an event held in Windance Country Club in Gulfport (Mississippi), where our player Daniela Campillo has played a essential role.
“I am really proud of the girls and how they handled themselves throughout our first matchplay event this weekend,” said ULM head coach Rachel Pollock. “We are a program that has a lot of fight and are capable of playing some really great golf. Today’s match versus JMU was a great matchup, and one where we knew we had to bring our best. Every player fought hard to the end. We were five down at one point during the match, but rallied for a great win.”
Johanna Sjursen was one down with five holes remaining and stormed back to win 2up. Anna Andrysova dominated and won 4&3. Daniela Campillo, the Barcelona Golf Academy trained player, was two down with four holes to play and managed to force a playoff and won her match on the 20th hole to seal the title for the Warhawks. A fighter like she is, she made birdies at 17 and 18 holes, and the last one on the hole 3, the second of the playoff.
“I’m so proud of this team,” said Pollock. “The preparation and confidence that this builds heading into the rest of our spring season cannot be understated.”
ULM began the tournament on Monday with a 4-1 win over UAB in the opening round. Sara Hagglund, Alessia Mengoni, Sjursen and Campillo all earned wins and sent ULM into the semifinals. The Warhawks defeated Little Rock in round two after Andrysova, Sjursen and Campillo all won their matches that sent ULM into the championship round versus JMU. Mengoni went toe-to-toe with the No. 1 ranked player in the Sun Belt Conference in her match versus James Madison, finishing down one versus her opponent.
Congratulations to Daniela and all the Warhawks team!
