Alejandro de Castro, a player trained at the Barcelona Golf Academy and currently in his first year atAnderson University (AU), has been the main player of the South Atlantic Conference Championship 2023, since leading the event wire-to-wire he has been individual and team champion with the Trojans.
The event has been held from April 16 to 18 at the Lake Hickory Country Club, a par 72 of 6,605 yards, and with his first round of 67 shots (-5), Alex already matched AU’s the second-best round in a conference tournament, and matched the 11th-lowest round in program history.
Playing exceptionally well, Alejandro de Castro signed a 68 in windy conditions for the second round, staying in the lead to face the third round with confidence. Holding on to his 3-shot lead, he delivered a scorecard of 72 and finished as a great champion, with a total of 207 shots (-9), three shots ahead of his teammates Reece Coleman and junior Calahan Keever, tied at 210 ( -6). Simon Wright and Daniel Coker completed the team.
“So excited for this men’s team!” said Anderson Director of Golf Danny Neal. “Seven wins in a single year with the last one being the SAC Championship! And what a special event for Dro! Winning the SAC Championship low medalist as a freshman! Great play by Reece and Cal tying for runner-up. Solid contributions from Daniel and Simon. What a team effort! Has been all year! I couldn’t be prouder of this group! Now it’s on to regionals!”
With the win, the nationally top-ranked Trojans clinched an automatic berth in the 2023 NCAA Southeast Region Championship, which will be hosted, May 11-13, by Nova Southeastern at the Grande Oaks Golf Club in Davie, Fla., with the NCAA National Championships slated for May 22-26, in Warren, Ohio.
We can’t be more proud of you, Alex, well done!
