When our young elite players reach a very high level, what they have to do is compare themselves with the professionals in competition. This is what Erik Shukhart is doing, who still in his amateur status is demonstrating his game quality and his know-how among the consummate Spanish pros.
It was great news to write about his second place achieved in the Catalunya Pro Tour event at Club de Golf Costa Daurada, last April, but it is even more exciting to celebrate his sensational eighth place achieved in the Campeonato de Madrid de Profesionales PGAe 2023, with a draw of 117 players.
Not only because it is one of the most prestigious events on the calendar for the Madrid pros, but also because this time it was open, as it was included in the Spain PGA Golf Tour 2023, the national tour of the PGA of Spain. Playing against relevant names of Spanish golf, such as Gonzalo Fernández-Castaño, Jordi García del Moral, Pedro Oriol, Carlos Balmaseda, Álvaro Velasco, Antonio Hortal, or the winner, Daniel Berna, Erik’s tied eighth place has much more value than what it looks like.
And most importantly, Shukhart was the best amateur in the tournament. Without forgetting that the conditions of the golf course at the Real Club de Golf Lomas-Bosque were really difficult. Only six players managed to get below par on the field, and Erik finished with 217 strokes (+1).
Erik Shukhart started the event in the middle of the table with a first round of 74 (+2) strokes on Thursday, with 3 birdies stained by 5 bogeys in the second 9 holes, the most complicated part on the course. On Friday he played solid and began to go up with a round of 73 (+1) strokes, with 4 birdies, 3 bogeys and a double bogey.
With no doubt, in the third and final round on Saturday Erik stepped on the gas, attacking with 4 initial birdies and a bogey, his best result of the event over the first 9 holes (33). It was the same in the difficult seconds 9 holes (37), with his best result of the week with 3 birdies and three bogeys, for a total of 70 (-2) strokes.
A great result, congratulations Erik.
