It is with great joy and pride that we receive the news, from the other side of the Atlantic, of the ‘Freshman of the Year 2023’ award that has been given to our player Alejandro de Castro in the South Atlantic Conference (SAC).
Three of these Major Awards granted by the South Atlantic Conference, among all the participating university teams, have gone to the men’s golf category for three members of the Trojans of Anderson University, in South Carolina (USA).
His teammate Reece Coleman has been voted ‘Golfer of the Year 2023’, his golf coach Danny Neal has been voted ‘Coach of the Year’, and Alex de Castro has been voted ‘Freshman of the Year’, which means he’s been considered the best freshman in the conference.
Alex arrived this year at Anderson University to study Biology from the Barcelona Golf Academy at the Club de Golf Barcelona, in Sant Esteve Sesrovires, and is currently ranked No. 54 in the national Division II with an average of 72.42 strokes per round. He’s finished within the Top-30 in all of the tournaments played this year, including two Top-10s and three Top-20s finishes. His lowest round of the season was a 67 at Camden Intercollegiate, and he also made other under par rounds this season (one 69 and two 70s).
Under the direction of Danny Neal, the Trojans have reached No. 1 in the National Ranking, having won six titles of the eight tournaments they have played this season, posting a 71.62 adjusted scoring average as a team.
Congratulations Alex, what a great start!
