After three days of intense competition at the Costa Daurada Golf Club, on February 25th, 26th and 27th in Tarragona, the Federació Catalana de Golf declared its new champions of the 2022 Boy, Girl and Cadete categories, with an exciting victory starring of our player Daniela Campillo.
Barcelona Golf Academy presented fifteen players to a top-level tournament, which brought together the strongest young players of Catalan golf. And in the women’s category we had one of the favorites, Daniela, playing on the course where she has grown up as a golfer, but she had to play and fight because the competition was fierce.
After a discreet first day of 76 shots, on Saturday and Sunday she played great golf, full of excitement, signing two rounds of 71 and 72 strokes that gave her the title with a total of 219 strokes. On Sunday she came out two shots behind Natalia Herrera and three ahead of Alexandra Vidal. On the 3rd hole, she had a one-shot lead over both, but had problems with a bogey on the 4th, a double bogey on the 5th, and a bogey on the 8th.
On the 12th hole with Daniela’s birdie, Natalia’s par and Alexandra’s bogey, there was a triple tie at the top of the leaderboard. In the 13th Daniela made bogey, and was one behind with Natalia and Alexandra par and par. But on the 14th, Daniela reached the green with the drive and made a birdie, while her rivals repeat the par. Tied, the 15th hole was going to be key. With great shots, all three players had an eagle putt. Natalia and Alexandra’s putting went for birdies, but Daniela hit the last one to hole a 10-foot downhill putt and… eagle!
Next, Daniela made a great up&down on the 16th to get par after missing the tee off and not being able to reach the green. And signing two academy pars on holes 17th and 18th, with great approaches to the flag, Daniela won her long-awaited triumph: champion of Catalonia Under-18.
With Daniela in such tremendous form, we mustn’t forget that Laia Llorens was also with her, ranked 11th with 248 shots.
With a great environment of friendship and team feeling, up to 12 BGA players were in the men’s category. The best results came in the Under-16 category, with Juan de Castro placing 5th (232 shots), Jan Farré 6th (233), and Ignacio Berea 7th (234); results with which they were also 18th, 20th and 21st respectively in the global Scratch of the event.
In the Scratch leaderboard were also Vicente Mestre, 12th (226 shots); Nikolay Barrios, 23rd with 235; Bruno Martí, 25th with 240; Amaury Ledain, 26th with 241; Marc Llorens, 31st with 247; Vladimir Taldykin, 35th with 253; Mateo Acevedo, 43rd with 271; Alex Company, 44th with 274; and Daniil Taldykin, 45th with 276. These last three were also 19th, 20th and 21st in the Under-16 category, respectively.
Parallel to this Catalonia Championship, were the two invitations for the Under-18 Spanish Championship between the players of the BGA and the members of the Club de Golf Barcelona who played at Club de Golf Costa Daurada. When we find out which of our players has achieved direct entry by handicap, we will know who are the two best players in this championship who have won the two places.
Cheers, we’re going great!
